Response: Thanks very much for sending me your work, which I read with interest. Unfortunately, I’m afraid I didn’t feel passionately enough about it to offer representation. I think its a good idea, but at the moment the opening feels quite slow – I think that you perhaps get bogged down in the minutiae of her every day, which slows the pace of the novel. Our industry is subjective by nature so someone else may well feel differently and I wish you the best of luck with that.

Response: Thank you for writing to us. I do apologies for the standard email; we have been so inundated with submissions recently that we are unable to give each one an individual reply. I do assure you that we have considered your work carefully and I am sorry to say that we feel that it is not going to be one for us. Of the hundreds of samples we receive each month, we do, in fact, only ask for a handful of complete manuscripts. I am sorry not to be writing with better news and I do wish you luck with finding an agent elsewhere.

Response: Thank you for giving us the chance to consider your work. Unfortunately this is not right for us. We are replying as soon as possible to give you the best chance of finding the right agent. We are incredibly selective, so please do not be too disheartened. Another agent may well feel differently.

Response: Thank you for the offer of your manuscript. I’ve had a chance to read it now and I’m sorry to say that I won’t be able to represent you. We receive many thousands of submissions a year and as I only take on one or two clients a years, I do have to be extremely sure of my choice when I do offer representation. This is only my opinion so do try other agencies. I do wish you luck in finding an agent to suit you.

Response: Thank you for sending me your work and for giving me the opportunity to consider your work. Please accept my apologies for the delay in responding to you. In recent months I have been inundated with submissions and like to consider each one carefully. I have read your material, but I did not feel it would be right for my list and therefore I am unable to offer you representation. I am sorry not to be writing with better news, but I hope this response will not discourage you. I wish you all the best with your writing.

Response: Thank you for your email and the material which we enjoyed reading. As a small agency we take on very few of the many writers who approach us each year and, having considered your work, we do not feel we could offer to add you to our list. I’m afraid that the sheer volume of manuscripts coming into this office prevents us from providing you with a more detailed and personal response. May we take this opportunity to wish you success with another agent or publisher.

Response: Thanks for your patience in waiting to hear from me. I appreciate the spirit of the writing, but I’m afraid I wasn’t gripped by the narrative. I think it’s down to personal taste more than any direct criticism. I very much hope that you find someone more receptive elsewhere.

Response: Many thanks for sending us this proposal, which I read with interest. I considered it carefully but I’m afraid on balance it just doesn’t quite grab my imagination in the way that it must for me to offer to represent you. So I must follow my instinct and pass on this occasion. I’m sorry to be so disappointing, but thanks for thinking of us. Of course this is a totally subjective judgement, so do try other agents and I wish you every success.

Response: Dear Michelle, Many thanks for your submission. Unfortunately, after careful consideration, we have decided that this isn't quite the right book for our list. Due to the large number of submission we receive every day, we have to be very selective. Best wishes,

  13. these are so very familiar... we have received dozens like them but it has never dimmed our passion for what we love to do. And I can tell you feel the same way!
